I walk to work. Everyday. The 25min ramble from Ballsbridge through Ringsend, over the Eastlink bridge to Mayor St is fairly mundane. Sure, I pass the Gasworks and Shelbourne park, and OK there’s a nice view of the Aviva from Ringsend Bridge. But one of the highlights of my daily stroll is the inventive and creative work of a small café next to the underpass at the start of South Lotts Road.
‘Food Game’ have a small, outoor blackboard standing on the street. Nothing too special. Except instead of always pushing ‘Coffee for €1.50’ specials, they occasionally display topical, quirky, funny or thought provoking messages. They know they are perfectly positioned at the worktime pedestrian footfall. Especially to any Facebook-ers or Google-ers on their way to and from Ballsbridge anon.
What they do is nothing expensive or revolutionary. It’s simple, it knows it’s audience and it’s done well.
Below is a quick sample of some of Food Game’s placards that greet weary ratracers every day –
During the 2012 Olympics Katie Taylor was the national icon everyone was behind. The buzz was sensational. Great idea by the guys to get on the back of this and offer free coffees if she won. The girl walking towards the sign with her smartphone in hand was an Editor of Her.ie and my legs subsequently ended up in her photo that she in turn blogged. Small world.
Displayed during a weeklong of ‘Irish summer tsunami’ or ‘July’ as we call it. This was a bit of cheer during a very bleak morning.
Madonna was in town. And of course she loves coffee. The tongue firmly in cheek for this one, as if the Queen of Pop was stuck for the price of a coffee! I love the idea that Maz might have seen this and decided to pop in for a skinny-micro-frappa-mocha-cino.
This one doesn’t really need explanation. If it does.
After the rush from the Olympics the country’s spirit sagged a little. The guys tried to lift our spirits by reminding us. Sweet of them.
