Ultimate Sleep Playlist?

I don’t know about you, but I love nothing more than drifting to sleep with my earphones in. Despite the 4 or 5am realisation that you’ve become entangled in said earphones and casting them off in a sleepy state. But there’s only certain music that works for me. Some music can be quite deceptive in it’s sleep inducing properties for example take Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. One of my all time favourites, but as you slowly fall into a nice snooze, the dynamic of the piece changes dramatically with a crash of brass and cymbals.

So, what makes a decent sleep playlist? Is it the complete opposite of your gym playlist? Personally, I’ve often drifted off to sleep listening to Stephen Fry reading Oscar Wilde, so it need not be necessarily musical. Maybe it’s something to do with the rhythm of the words or the beat. Julie London’s Cry Me A River sends me right off to sleep but as does Clouds by the Rumble Strips which is considerably more upbeat.

Sites like Sleepbot.com provide what they call an Environmental Broadcast ”featuring a random cycling of some of the most sleep-worthy tracks ever created”. I would love to know how they determine their sleep-worthiness… I have tried Sleepbot a few times but it usually ends up waking me up with some bizarre ”ambience” sound that buzzes in your ear. I actually dreamt I was being attacked by a bee before waking to realise it had been Sleepbot in my ears.

Here’s my Ultimate Sleep Playlist (unfinished and without a huge pile of thought) feel free to add your suggestions in the comments. Maybe DubStep is what you relax to, or speed metal, hey everyone’s different!
