on the psychiatrist’s chair… my record obsession

Cornershop – Brimful of Asha (1999)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5rQmB7SCrzc

”everyone needs a bosom for a pillow” made me giddy at the innocent age of twelve, the kind of lyric you didnt really understand if it was meant to be dirty or not. I’d been played the single by my uncle Eddie who lives in London. He was always fascinating to me, with all these LPs and “mini-vinyls” as I knew them as, at the time. Listening to all these bands that I had never heard of – Echo & the Bunnymen, the Cosmic Rough Riders, the Television Personalities, the Talking Heads… He’d always play me something new every time I visited and gauge my reaction, then predict my next move musically-

While other kids were off listening to Blink 182 and Sum41, I was discovering all this music- walking around with T-Rex boogies stuck in my head. It was subconsciously growing on me, it didn’t hit me until he played me Brimful of Asha. Which I instantly loved especially when I saw the video (seek it out on youtube). Which featured a young girl going through piles of vividly coloured 45s playing each one on her trusty RCA Victor, while the band sang from the sleeves of her 45s. Brimful became my favourite track in 1999, unbeknownst to myself the track contained heaps of musical references that until I looked back on the song I had ever realised. A little older and a little wiser.

Well it’s a brimful of Asha on the 45
